Hearth Room

Home is where the hearth is. At least in our family our hearts gather around the hearth. We love a fire in the winter. The dancing flames and crackling sounds mean warmth for our hands and hearts. The fireplace calls us to enjoy being together. Who doesn’t like to cuddle in front of the fire? That is why I wanted a hearth room. Ours is off the kitchen so it combines the comfort of food and the hearth. Many times, all four of us and both cats end up snuggled on the couch.

Because this room is so important I wanted it to be beautiful and inviting. Really the room is almost a sunroom because of all its windows. This meant that the fireplace had to really make a statement. I found a similar design to what we did on our fireplace on Pinterest, and I fell in love with it. I love a herringbone design and the design done in wood made it exactly the look I was going for. The wood tones and textures are the perfect touch of warmth I wanted. Also, the brick on the fireplace is the same brick that was used in the family room and on the arches. Using the same brick in these areas gives a cohesive feel. The mantle is also is the same in both the family room, master bedroom, master bathroom, and the hearth room. These mantles are special to us because they are from a pecan tree that fell on our property. We had a mill come out and cut mantles for us and the live headboard in my son’s room. Another feature that ties spaces together are the dark beams that you see in the family room and through the kitchen and into the hearth room.

When I designed this room, I was hoping it would be “our place”.  I wanted it to be comfortable for everyday life. If you read about the family room, you know I love Joanna Gaines and I chose another one of her rugs for this space. I paired the rug with a sectional with a lounge and an ottoman. This arrangement allows the whole family to put their feet up after a long day. The ottoman serves a dual purpose though! The top of this ottoman can flip over revealing a plastic table top complete with drink holders. I can’t even tell you how many bowls of popcorn this ottoman has held.

Plenty of seating was important to us so an antique barley twist table with leaves provides room for over flow. I mix matched the chairs that went with this table and some black farmhouse chairs from Overstock.com. Doing this tied the tables together in a fun way. The table is also the perfect place for a card game or a puzzle. Next to the fireplace you will see another antique barley twist table where we keep some TV components hidden by some of my plant babies. So many of these beautiful antiques I was blessed to inherit from my mother who gave me the love of good antique furniture. My grandmothers and my mother both have shared many family heirlooms that I love to proudly display in my home. I feel like these treasures add character and history that you can’t get with “all new”. The candlesticks on the mantle are from the family collection, as well as, most of the silver in my silver tray gallery wall and the mirror in my recipe gallery wall. If you don’t have family heirlooms that is ok. What a great excuse to go antique shopping! You never know what you can find in a good antiques store.

I will wrap up this room tour with this Irish blessing, “God bless the corners of your house and all the lintels blessed. Bless the hearth and bless the board and bless each place of rest. Bless each door that opens wide to strangers as to kin. Bless each crystal window pane that lets the starlight in. Bless the rooftop overhead and every sturdy wall. The peace of man. The peace of God.”
