Family Room

Come on in and sit a spell. The family room is my favorite place to visit and take in the view. It is the place where the family gathers to open Christmas presents and where the small group from our church does devotionals. I wanted this room to feel elevated yet still comfortable a welcoming. I love the tufted armchairs with their nail head trim that ties them in with the love seat. They provide the fancy while the huge leather couch adds a cozy touch and lets you sink in when you sit.

The room is grounded by a rug by the one-and-only Joanna Gaines. I adore her and her style, so her rug of course appealed to me. It is the perfect blend of traditional with a touch of modern. The trunk style coffee table offers storage and the top lifts to extend toward the couch for a closer surface area for working or eating.

Sometimes I feel like a brick fireplace can be overwhelming, but the vaulted ceilings are lower on the fireplace side of the room allowing just the right amount of brick. We also used a very light German smear on our brick to soften it and give it a weathered, country feel. The same technique was used on the arches leading both in and out of the family room. In my opinion arches are the best way to make hardlines in an open doorway less harsh and more inviting. Arches also add undeniable architectural interest. Another way we added interest in this room was by putting in dark wood beams that draw your eyes up to the vaulted ceilings and the cute farmhouse ceiling fan. Black built-ins flank the fireplace and provide both open shelving for decor and closed storage for games and such. Above the built-ins you will find swing arm wall sconces that are the perfect mood lighting to highlight the open shelving. The shiplap in the built-ins coordinates with the shiplap in the entryway and adds more visual interest.

Tucked into the corner of the family room is my family piano. It has been handed down through four generations and played by five. We constructed that particular wall in the family room specifically to accommodate it. It continues to function well, and I cherish its history and elegance.

I hope some aspect of this room has inspired you to create the ideal space for your family gatherings.
