Master Bedroom
Of all the rooms in my house I think the master bedroom feels the most like me. I walk in and smile. I feel relaxed like I am wrapped in a cocoon or a welcome hug. I think most of what created these feelings in this room are the colors. Colors can do so much for our mood. My bedroom is heavy in gray blues. Studies have found that blue can create relaxing, calm feelings and some studies even say it can lower your heart rate! I would say that is perfect in a bedroom.
The Master was inspired by a wall mural I found on Esty. It is a gorgeous abstract of a stormy sea. That dark cloud blue is my very favorite color and nothing is better than sleeping in the rain, so I was sold. Pulling from the deep blues in the mural we decided to paint the recess of our ceiling Granite Peak by Sherman Williams. This rich blue made the room seem both cozy and intimate. It also helped to draw the eye to the beautiful wood beams we lined the recess with. Plus, it made the crystal chandelier fan really pop. The ceiling really helped me to achieve the dramatic, moody atmosphere I was going for.

Another thing that really added to the atmosphere in this room is the micro cement fireplace. I love how the gray in the fireplace plays with the deep blues. The modern look of the fireplace balances the more traditional elements in the room without coming across cold. The warm, dark wood mantle also helps soften the look. Plus, what is more romantic and cozy than a fireplace?
The real focal point of any bedroom is the bed. This is my first king size bed and it is magical! I love that I can spread out and not worry about kicking my husband in the night. We can even cat visitors in the night, and they don’t bother him. (They sleep on my side because they know better than to try sleeping with him. LOL) Anyway, I felt like the tufted cream was just the right balance of comfort and elegance. It pops perfectly against the mural, and it blends well with the antique side tables that I inherited.
If I have not already mentioned it, I love birds. Based on the theme of the ocean in the mural I decided to use some vintage wading bird illustrations. These illustrations remind me of the classic Audubon illustrations, and I feel they really elevate the room’s style. I even found a matching decorative pillow for the bed!
Speaking of bedding, the comforter I chose is from Target! You do not have to spend an arm and a leg on bedding. I wanted something clean and simple so as not to distract from everything else in the room. I really was drawn to the linen texture of the bedspread. I just jazzed it up a little with some decorative pillows and a throw for color and more texture.
Under my beautiful bird prints is a dresser from IKEA that I DIYed. With help from my dad, we added cane to each drawer and then framed it out with lattice molding. It turned out just like the more expensive versions I would find on the web. This project turned a very modern, plain dresser into an eye-catching one with a beachy feel. Other than the bench at the end of the bed, which is from Ashley Furniture and can be pulled into the family room or dining room for more seating, everything else is something I already had when we moved. Both side tables are courtesy of my mother’s trove of amazing antiques and the black China cabinet is a piece I have had for years that I found in a shop in downtown McKinney on the square. I think each furniture piece in this room adds character and a story. I think it also shows that there are no rules in where and how you can use furniture. If you want a China cabinet in your bedroom, go for it! If you want to use an old sowing table as a bed side table, why not?
Finally, the rug really pulls the room together for me. I love this rug. I love the pattern, and I feel like the colors are spot on. They really coordinate it all. Also, the rug can be found at Home Depot! I am telling you; their prices sure beat the fancy rug stores and it is washable.
I hope this room inspires you to make your bedroom the relaxing retreat you deserve! Get creative and have fun.
